About KDR Flashware Solutions Ltd

KDR is a fabless semiconductor company enabling new technologies in flash memory to streamline storage in embedded mobile device.
The company invented a unique technology based on software, signal processing and system resources, which allows a single flash chip solutions with code & data on one die. KDR solutions have inherent benefits for mobile applications, mainly cost effectiveness, lower power consumption, data robustness, smaller footprint and simpler system design.

The need

Mobile devices become more complicated, with larger code inside. Using standard OS increases the need for large code space since downloading additional application becomes easier and popular.
Additionally, the need for large data storage space expands to lower-end devices. There is also a need to have the storage embedded, as some of the data is proprietary (e.g. belong to a service provider). Having embedded storage also increases the revenues of mobile device vendor and decrease the usage failure due to connector's problems.
On top of the above - the pressure for smaller size, lower price and lower power consumption never stops.
Current possible solutions are (1) using a large NOR Flash, used for both code and data, which is an expensive solution (widely used in cellular phones), (2) using an embedded storage (NAND) which is also expensive solution or (3) using flash disk only and run the code from a large DRAM, which is expensive and less reliable solution.
The future in mobile, game, and other hand held device is looking for less space, less power and less cost. KDR’s technology offers a single Flash chip with standard interface, for both code and data, cost performance of NAND and both easy access reliability of NOR.

The technology

KDR technology is based on Spansion (Saifun) effective NROM flash silicon technology, which is already implemented at several FABs around the world. To reduce risks and accelerate the roadmap, KDR has signed an agreement with Spansion on developing the first chip.
KDR's devices are configurable, secured-ready and highly reliable for both code and data. KDR technology is patent-pending and well differentiated from other technologies implemented for the FLASH market.
The first KDR's chip, will replace, pin-to-pin, currently installed NOR flash (e.g. in cellular phones), providing higher storage, faster data writing and will be significantly less expensive. Down the road, KDR devices contain patented application-specific features, increasing even more its cost effectiveness and system performance.

The people

KDR was founded by Rony Levy, a veteran in the FLASH memory arena. Rony was with M-systems at its early days, with SanDisk and lately with Saifun, and is highly familiar with all aspects of the memory component technologies and markets. In addition, Rony held different managerial positions and he was the founder of RadioTel and its CEO until its merger with Witcom. Rony is supported by a small group of professionals, highly experienced in the semiconductors industry and software technologies.

Status

KDR will use SMIC as a foundry which is currently in production with its flash DDF process licensed from Spansion/Saifun, with Spansion blessing. KDR is also negotiating with one of the leading mobile device manufacturers as a partner for product validation.
